PQS1 PAR Quantum Sensor

PQS1 PAR Quantum sensor is developed for accurate measurement of PAR. It offers a response with an excellent match to the ideal PAR response. In addition the optical design of the diffuser offers optimized cosine correction. The instrument is designed for continuous outdoor or indoor installation. Perfect for studies of crop growth in green houses for example.

Both solar radiation and artificial light sources like for example high pressure sodium lamps are common sources of Photosynthetic Active Radiation.
PQS1’s sensitivity has been optimized to provide reliable and accurate measurements regardless of the PAR source. This is important for horticultural studies and plant physiology monitoring.

The mounting flange incorporates a bubble level and adjustment screws, for easy leveling. A threaded hole takes the accessory screw-in mounting rod for fitting to masts and poles. Two PQS1 sensors can easily be bolted back-to-back, and fitted with the mounting rod, to make a simple PAR albedometer. The standard cable length is 5 m, with an option of 15 m. PQS1 is ideal for use with the METEON handheld display and data logger for field test use.

FAQ

• Can I use a PQS 1 (PAR Lite) meter under water?

  • Yes, however the depth is limited to 2 meters. Please also take the “breaking of light on the water surface” in consideration. This affects the calibration factor.

• PAR readings at noon increase by the order of 0.001 umol/m²s. Can you tell me whether small readings like this are likely to be accurate? If not, what is the effective lower irradiance limit detectable by this sensor?

  • 0,001 µmol represents a voltage of 5nV (nano Volt). As you can understand this very low voltage cannot be measured with a data logger. Besides the absolute error from the data logger, the PQS 1 PAR quantum sensor (PAR Lite) also has some specifications to consider.
    There is the non- stability, non linearity, temperature dependence and the quantum response. Measurements under 1 µmol/m²s are not to be trusted as accurate. (effective limit)

• What is the advised calibration frequency for a PQS 1 (PAR Lite)?

  • We advise to re-calibrate the PQS 1 (PAR Lite) radiometer every two years.

• If I use a PQS 1 PAR quantum sensor (PAR Lite radiometer) under water, can I connect a data logger to it?

  • Yes, however the data logger needs to be placed on the surface (it is weather resistant, but cannot be lowered into the water).

• How many PQS 1 PAR quantum sensors (PAR Lite radiometers_ do you advise to use in a greenhouse?

  • Normally 1 should be enough. If in the greenhouse the conditions differ, like different glass type, shielding or glass cover, it is advised to use more than one PQS 1 PAR quantum sensor per typical condition.

• What kind of pyranometer do you suggest for usage inside a greenhouse?

  • CMP 6 in combination with PQS1 PAR Quantum Sensor is advised.  CMP 6 for outside usage to measure Global solar radiation. PQS1 to measure  PAR radiation inside which is most sensitive for plants and crops.
