Lufft's history and evolution

From precision instruments to trusted environmental intelligence

Lufft’s story began in Stuttgart in 1881, when Gotthilf Lufft founded Mech. Werkstatt G. Lufft. From the beginning, the company was built around measurement precision and reliability.

Over the decades, Lufft evolved from mechanical instruments to electronic environmental measurement. Its expertise expanded from local manufacturing to international applications, including meteorology, road weather, renewable energy and environmental monitoring.

That ability to evolve while maintaining a strong focus on dependable measurement helped establish Lufft as a recognised name in professional weather sensing. Its history includes early mechanical instrumentation, a patent for an aneroid barometer and the development of the first Lufft family of all-in-one weather stations.

Today, Lufft’s weather sensing heritage continues within Kipp & Zonen, bringing together established environmental measurement expertise in one unified portfolio.

From environmental measurements to operational confidence

Better environmental decisions start with reliable measurements.

From maintaining safe roads and transportation networks to managing renewable energy assets and delivering accurate forecasts, organizations depend on reliable environmental information. Lufft technologies help transform complex environmental measurements into practical insight that supports day-to-day operations and long-term planning.

Meteorology & Environmental Monitoring

Supporting meteorological services, research organisations, and environmental monitoring networks with reliable atmospheric measurements and environmental intelligence.

Road Weather & Transportation

Helping transportation agencies monitor conditions, improve situational awareness, and support safer travel in changing weather conditions.

Renewable Energy

Providing weather intelligence that supports solar energy operations, performance monitoring, site optimisation, and operational decision-making.

The next chapter: WS J- Series

Built on the trusted Lufft WS heritage

One of Lufft's most recognised innovations has been its family of all-in-one weather sensors.

Building on the globally trusted WS platform, Kipp & Zonen recently introduced the WS J-Series, the next generation of compact weather sensors. The portfolio combines the proven measurement technology that customers know from Lufft with enhanced diagnostics, faster data updates, and a modernized platform designed for future innovation.

The portfolio includes twelve models tailored to different applications. Depending on the selected model, a single compact instrument can measure parameters such as:

  • Wind speed and direction
  • Air temperature
  • Relative humidity
  • Barometric pressure
  • Precipitation quantity and intensity
  • Precipitation type
  • Solar radiation
  • Lightning strike count

The shared platform enables organisations to select the measurements required for each site while maintaining a more consistent approach across their monitoring network.

Continuing the Lufft legacy

For more than a century, Lufft has helped customers measure and understand the world around them. That commitment remains unchanged today.

As part of Kipp & Zonen, Lufft's heritage of precision measurement continues to shape the future of environmental monitoring, helping organizations around the world make confident decisions in an increasingly weather-dependent world.
