Measuring solar radiation everywhere, read our customer’s stories in Newsletter 33article picture
Published: Thursday, July 9, 2015 Kipp & Zonen instruments are deployed around the world for many different studies. Studies of solar radiation are done in meteorology, solar energy, material testing, greenhouse control, building automation and many more. In newsletter 33 we share two of these applications where solar radiation is measured to provide valuable insights: in solar boat racing and at the Whitworth Meteorological Observatory.

The CLAFIS Private Energy Solar Boat team won the first solar boat race of the year; the Dutch championship for solar boats held in Akkrum, Friesland, in May. Thanks to our SMP11 pyranometer the team could optimise the Maximum Power Point Trackers (MPPT’s) and solar panels in their preparation. The next race in Monaco is expected to be as successful with their new knowledge on board.

The Whitworth Meteorological Observatory in Manchester shares their measurement equipment including a pair of CMP 11 pyranometers and a CM 121B shadow ring in a 2 page article. The observatory supports scientific projects focussing on urban climatology and air quality. Of course, also for undergraduate and postgraduate research students across the university.

In this newsletter you can also learn more about the LABVIEW possibilities with our SOLYS sun trackers. If you want to monitor the tracker status the new SOLYS Monitor software program can be used to set up communication and to view or log its status.

On the last page we present our latest members to the Kipp & Zonen team: Robin Zhang and Xander van Mechelen.
