Making a Global Brewer Map

Making a Global Brewer Maparticle picture
Published: Tuesday, February 14, 2012 Worldwide there are now well over 200 Brewers measuring the Ozone layer and the UV radiation. These Brewers are positioned in many countries, ranging from the Arctic via the equator to the Antarctic. Visitors of our factory are often surprised to hear at which locations the Brewers are stationed. This brought us to the idea of making a map that shows where all Brewers are deployed.

There are various sources that share the location of Brewer instruments. The World Ozone and UV Data Center (WOUDC) for example, but also Brewer networks such as Iberonesia or NEUBrew. This public data, combined with data from publications resulted in a map showing almost all active Brewers. Although there are more than 200 Brewers, the number of Brewer stations is smaller since many stations contain more than one unit.

The map clearly shows that the main concentration of Brewers lies in the US, Canada and Europe. Another big concentration can be found on the east coast of Asia. Due to the Ozone hole over the Antarctic, many Brewers are positioned there.

Remarkably, only a few stations are located close to the equator. The absence of Brewers in this aera is a discussion topic within the groups that measure Ozone from satellites. For this reason, we are happy to have installed 3 Brewers in Vietnam last year.

Please have a look at the map to see how your part of the world is covered with the Brewer instruments. If you have any questions or additions to this list, feel free to contact us.
